At the end of last year Spotify followed Facebook’s lead and opened up its platform to third-party developers in a bid to become the online destination for music and to add extra features, such as concert ticket sales, to its popular music service. One of the new Spotify apps, ‘The Complete Collection’, will allow users to browse images, lyrics and album liner notes to learn more about iconic artists while listening to their playlist. Another one, 'Def Jam', made by Def Jam Recordings, will help hip-hop fans enjoy better music discovery in this genre and offers neat curation tools. While 'Filtr' is a playlist app, which allows users to build lists based on the music tastes of their Facbook friends. It also recommends editorial playlists based on what each user likes which update it real-time. The first Spotify apps, introduced last November, included reviews and playlists from music magazines such as Rolling Stone, concert information from Songkick and software that displays lyrics in time with songs.
