The Mac App Store launched on the 6th of January, 2011 with 1,000 apps to begin with, and about a year and four months after release, the Store has amassed 10,000 apps. The report comes via a French website, Mac Generation, which reports that the Store has accumulated more than 10,000 apps. They say by comparison, the iOS App Store contains over 6,00,000 applications. MacRumors says that their sister site, AppShopper confirms the milestone reporting that it's indexed 10,339 applications in the Mac App Store. While, of course, the Mac App Store has a signicantly lower number of applications than what's offered in the iOS App Store, the latter has been around for longer and the Mac App Store isn't doing too bad for itself in terms of download numbers. In December, the Mac App Store passed 100 million downloads making it the "largest and fastest growing PC software in the world". The Mac App Store started with the intention of making software programs, like Apple's iMovie downloadable through a desktop retail location rather than selling software DVDs. The Store also enables users to buy individual pieces of software, when they would otherwise have to buy a DVD bundle for only one program. Mac users had to upgrade to Snow Leopard to access the Mac App Store and the update to OS X Lion could be done via the Mac App Store. For those of you that didn't upgrade to Snow Leopard and still don't have access to the Mac App Store, Apple's giving out the OS for free. Of course, this is mostly a push to get MobileMe users to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion so they move on to iCloud. If you would like the upgrade, which will come to you in the form of a disc, click here to enter your information. To upgrade to Snow Leopard, your Mac needs to have the following specs: Computer: Any Intel-based Mac (2005 onwards) Disk space: 5GB Memory: 1GB Have you used the Mac App Store yet?
