The freshest air in China might soon be inside cars as car makers plan to install internal air purifiers in new models sold in the country. Automakers Volvo, Nissan and PSA Peugeot Citroen announced that in response to the record levels of air pollution the new feature would be available in their cars for the next model year. Filters are not uncommon in China. Chinese regularly have air filters installed in their homes to combat the effects of air pollution. The Chinese government has been trying to discourage use of automobiles because their emissions are one of the main causes of air pollution in China along with emissions from the industrial sector. Because of restrictions on emissions and government subsidies favoring green cars, the most popular car for government officials is not the luxurious Mercedes or BMW but the electric Tesla. Tesla is a popular plug-in electric luxury car brand developed by American tech mogul Elon Musk.
