Ministers of communications and postal service of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states have approved here on Wednesday the single mail law and its executive statute.
The 23rd meeting of the ministerial committee on communications, postal service and information technology approved the draft regulations of the operation of express mail, parcel and shipping service providers.
The conferees also adopted a range of resolutions that regulate the purchase of mailing equipment, Kuwaiti Minister of Communications and Minister of State for Municipal Affairs Essa Ahmad Al-Kandari told reporters sidelines of the meeting.
"We have also discussed the recommendations of the 28th meeting of GCC post chiefs held here in early May relating to the regulation of the information and communications technology (ICT) and the suggestion of the technical committee to resolve overlapping in the postal services in the GCC countries," he disclosed.
"The meeting approved the GCC draft strategy, developed by the national centers' committee, to respond to emergencies in the internet and information security," Al-Kandari added.
He voiced hope that the outcome of the ministerial meeting would give a quantum leap to the development of communication and postal services in the fast-growing GCC states.
In his address to the meeting earlier today, GCC Secretary-General Abdullatif Al-Zayani said the GCC states made headway in their quest for economic integration.
"The ICT sector has become the engine of economic growth and a prerequisite of development," he affirmed.
However, Al-Zayani cautioned against the negative impacts of the new media on the social values of the Arab societies, calling for closer cooperation and coordination to stem such impacts
