The total deposits of the banking system, rather than those of the Central Bank of Egypt, hiked by about 9 billion pounds to 1.923 trillion pounds in January, compared to 1.914 trillion pounds in December, the CBE said on Monday.
The government's total deposits reached 305.5 billion pounds, 291.1 billion pounds of which are local currency deposits and about 86.3 billion pounds are foreign currency deposits, according to a CBE statement, of which MENA obtained a copy.
The non-governmental total deposits increased during January to about 1.617 trillion pounds, compared to 1.615 trillion pounds in the previous month, added the statement.
CBE’s statement also pointed out that the total non-governmental deposits in the local currency amounted to 1.335 trillion pounds, where the public sector’s share accounted for about 37.1 billion pounds.
