The Interior Ministry has activated the iris recognition system at the Doha international airport for the passengers entering Qatar in the framework of its continuous keenness on securing latest technology and applications for improving airport security. Iris recognition is an automated method of biometric identification that uses mathematical pattern-recognition techniques on video images of the irides of an individual''s eyes, whose complex random patterns are unique and can be seen from some distance. "Qatar is one of the first countries in the world to apply the Iris recognition system," said Director of Airport Security and Passport Department, Brig. Naser Ahmed Al Maliki, noting that the Interior Ministry has a large electronic data based on irises, which are unique to every person. The iris recognition is known to be the most accurate biometric security system in the world, he said. Thanks to this system, the unique pattern of the eye has to be recognized to be positively identified, he added. There are no any health risks associated with using iris technology, Brig. Al Maliki affirmed. (QNA) f l
