Did you know that adventure tourism is one of the biggest attractions of Kashmir? Well, not many must have been aware of that fact because most of the time, the beautiful valley is in the news for all the wrong reasons. But we take a plunge into the gushing rivers of Kashmir where the adrenaline pumping adventure spot, river rafting's gaining popularity. The turbulent rivers that flow from the rugged mountains especially from the icy heights of the Himalayas, is the perfect setting for water sports. The mighty rivers which are formed by innumerable streams, cruise along rocky gorges and deep forests and break into silvery white rapids. The Lidder River in Pahalgam is one such ideal location for white water river rafting. People have been thronging the ice-cold white waters of Lidder River to experience this sport. To enjoy the sport to the fullest, the river needs to be rough and wild and the best season for that is between April and September. Pahalgam is not the only place where adventure sports facilities are available. Gulmarg, Sonmarg and Drass also have a lot to offer to the tourists. One can go trekking in the Pir Panjal Range in the hilly regions of Gulmarg. The Nanga Parbat too offers several viewpoints, including Khilanmarg making it ideal for trekkers. Even golf is a very popular sport here. The Golf Club, designed by the British, is where one gets to see golf enthusiasts playing their game. Gulmarg is also an apt place for skiing but that's during the winters. Like Pahalgam, Sonmarg too is famous for river rafting. One can also go camping, fishing, trekking, skiing and try out the aero-sports there. The major attraction of the place is no doubt its majestic mountains, glaciers, rivers, meadows and forests. So while you are at Sonmarg, spend some time in the midst of nature. The enchanting valley of Drass is only 60 kilometres away from Kargil and it offers a wonderful opportunity for sports. Apart from trekking and skiing, one of the ancient sports of the locals here is the horse polo. This game has made Drass, one of the coldest places in the world, a favourite tourist destination.
