Ceasefire talks between Yemeni authorities and tribal al-Qaeda militants in Yemen have failed
Sanaa – Ali Rabea
An al-Qaeda suicide bomber was shot dead by the Yemeni army Thursday morning, as he tried to attack a military checkpoint in the southern Abyan province.
Military sources in Jaar, Abyan's largest town
, said the bomber targeted a checkpoint in the al-Joul area, near Jaar. Three armed accomplices fled the scene.
Meanwhile, two bombs exploded in the southern governorate of al-Bayda on Thursday, Yemeni Ministry of Defence has confirmed. The first bomb was planted outside the back gate of al-Bayda governor al-Thaheri al-Shaddadi’s house, while the second bomb exploded near a local intelligence building. No one was killed in the explosions.
Tribal mediators recently failed to negotiate a permanent ceasefire between Yemeni authorities and tribal al-Qaeda militants in al-Bayda, amid reports that President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi had refused the deal.
The President wants al-Qaeda leaders belonging to the Dhahab family of Kaifa tribe in al-Manasseh to turn themselves in to authorities without any pre-conditions.
