Supporters of former Egypt president Mohammed Morsi in Cairo
Cairo – Akram Ali
Thousand of supporters of ousted Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi, gathered in Cairo’s Rabaa El-Adwea district on Friday, as protesters chanted slogans against army leader Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.
Demonstrations were taking place on main roads of both the capital and in the city of Giza.
Clashes reportedly erupted between Morsi supporters and the opposition in Cairo’s famous al-Azhar mosque.
According to eyewitnesses, at the end Friday prayer, Morsi supporters began chanting for the reinstatement of the toppled president, which provoked opponents.
Security forces were however able to separate the two sides and gain control over the situation.
The Egyptian military had already warned against the use of violence during Friday's protests.
“Whoever resorts to violence and deviates from peacefulness in Friday’s rallies will put his life in danger,” the military said in a statement.
Meanwhile Morsi opponents gathered in Tahrir square, calling for the expulsion of the US ambassador in Cairo.
A flyer that was distributed among the protesters, called on the interim president and the army to expel the US ambassador, for expressing support for Morsi’s government
“We congratulate the Egyptian people for their peaceful revolution on June 30, where millions took to the street to overthrow the fascist regime that killed many of us and was supported by the US administration,” the flyer read.
It also added that June 30 was a popular revolution, and “not a military coup as Islamists and their American supporters claimed,” stressing the Egyptian people’s wish to oust the US envoy.
