Egyptian veteran Wael Gomaa has been at al-Ahly since 2001
Cairo – Hossam Al Said
Al-Ahly defender Wael Gomaa has signed a two-year contract extension, to remain at the Cairo club until 2015.
A day after teammate Mohammed Aboutreika renewed
his contract with Ahly, Gomaa has followed in his footsteps by accepting a 50 percent pay cut.
The 37-year old told the club's official website that he was "relieved" to have secured his future, adding that he wants to win "many more titles" with Ahly.
Gomma, who spent six months on loan at Qatari club al-Siliya in 2007, was recently approached by Saudi club al-Hilal over a potential move. However, the Ahly veteran snubbed any reported interest by putting pen-to-paper at the Cairo International Stadium.
Ahly's football director Sayed Abdel-Hafiz said: "Wael Gomaa is a decent player and he has shown us what he is made of when he renewed his contract without any specific demands. To give up half of his salary shows that how unique a player he is."
