Grand Imam of Al Azar Ahmed el Tayyeb accepted Tuesday the resignation of Al Azhar University President Abdel Hai Azab after a court ruling denying him extension in his position till the age of 65.
Tayyeb appointed deputy president Ibrahim el Hodhod as acting president till a new president is appointed.
Azab went to the Al Azhar Imam and presented his resignation once the court ruling was issued, in what he termed respect of law.
In October 2014, Al Azhar Grand Imam appointed Azab as new president of Al Azhar University to replace Usama al Abd who went on pension on July 31 of the same year.
Azab was the president number 13 of Al Azhar University since it was established in 1961.
