German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in Tokyo Monday, ahead of scheduled talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Merkel, visiting Japan for the first time in seven years, said Saturday she will campaign for further investment in the renewable energy sector during her two-day trip, according to (dpa) news agency.
German public opinion swung further against nuclear power after the 2011 triple meltdown at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in Japan, leading Merkel's government to order the shutdown the country's nuclear plants by 2022.
Merkel also plans to discuss Japan's strained ties with its neighbours with Abe, (Jiji Press) reported, citing an unnamed senior German official.
The German leader is also scheduled to meet Emperor Akihito. Merkel's trip comes as Germany prepares to host a June summit meeting of G7 leaders in Bavaria.
