Moroccan businessman, Karim Tazi officially joined the United Socialist Party (PSU) on Tuesday.
Tazi was handed his card personally by Secretary-General of the PSU, Nabila Mounib, during a January 17 meeting. The meeting took place at the home of Moroccan politician, Mohamed Bensaid Ait Idder. Several other party members were also present.
Tazi, who was one the participants of the February 20 Movement which emerged amid the so-called Arab Spring in late 2010, told journalists that his membership in the PSU is a part of his contribution to the party commitment to attract new members.
“I am seeking to offer my contribution to the party, especially in the communicative tie with the youth and the organization of the party,” Tazi said.
Tazi went on to note that the overall goal behind his affiliation with the PSU is, “to show that the PSU is an actual alternative for elites in Morocco, not as radical or extremist party.”
Tazi continued, saying that, “selfishness is prevalent among a number of businessmen. They do not support the regime nor the parties nor the social movements.”
“There is no reason preventing the elites from joining political parties,” Tazi continued. “I’ve struggled over the past years. I’ve experienced dire moments… and I was attacked media, but in the end, nothing happened.”
While discussing the political situation in Morocco with PSU members, Tazi said, “Moroccans need a strong leftist party, calling them to counterattack the label of Moroccans, who claim that the PSU is a radical and extremist party.”
For his part, Aït Idder said, “Tazi is now considered the backbone of the PSU’s activities, by virtue of his intellectual and financial support.”
Mounib said that “Tazi is now a springboard to attract other intellectuals, businessmen and artists.”
