Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is making a surprise visit to Mexico on Wednesday, a country he has harshly criticized, ahead of a major speech Wednesday night on his controversial immigration policy.
Trump will meet with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto hours before he flies back to Arizona to deliver the speech. Nieto had invited both Trump and Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
Trump has repeatedly said he would build a giant wall on the US-Mexican border to keep Mexicans out, and that he would get Mexico to pay for it. He also has vowed to deport about 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S., a position he is expected to soften in his speech Wednesday night.
Clinton has so far decline Nieto's invitation and her campaign blasted Trump's decision to go. "From the first days of his campaign, Donald Trump has painted Mexicans as 'rapists’ and criminals and has promised to deport 16 million people, including children and U.S. citizens, said Clinton communications director Jennifer Palmieri said in a statement. "He has said we should force Mexico to pay for his giant border wall. He has said we should ban remittances to families in Mexico if Mexico doesn't pay up." Nieto tweeted that he wants the discussion to "promote the interests of Mexico in the world and, principally, to protect Mexicans wherever they are." Despite the gesture, Trump could face considerable protests from Mexicans, who have been angered by his comments, and security is expected to be increased for the visit
