Seventy-seven percent of U.S. adults told the Gallup Poll they ate dinner at home the day before the survey was conducted, while younger people ate out more. The poll of 1,014 U.S. adults, conducted July 9-12, indicated Americans reported spending $151 on food per week on average, but 1-in-10 Americans said they spend $300 or more per week and, while 8 percent spent less than $50 per week. Young adults spent an average $173 a week for food, more than what older Americans say they spend. Those with incomes of $75,000 or more per year averaged $180 per week, compared with $144 for those with incomes of $30,000 to $74,999, and $127 for the lowest income group. Having children younger than age 18 living at home cost families an average $30 more per week than having no children at home, the survey said. The margin of error was 4 percentage points, but the estimates for average spending have a margin of error of $7.
