The Nebraska Medical Center announced on Monday that an Ebola patient admitted to the hospital over the weekend has died of the disease.
Dr. Martin Salia was a surgeon who contracted the disease in Sierra Leone, his native country, where he worked at several medical facilities, according to local reports there. He is a permanent US resident, and his wife lives in the state of Maryland.
Salia's death was announced on the @NebraskaMed Twitter account, where Dr. Phil Smith, medical director of the biocontainment unit, said Salia "was extremely critical when he arrived here, and unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we weren't able to save him." The account noted that the patient "was suffering from advanced symptoms of Ebola when he arrived on Saturday, which included kidney and respiratory failure," and although he received "every possible treatment available," Salia succumbed to the disease, Smith said.
The hospital, located in the state capital Omaha, will hold a press conference later on Monday.
