Once again the world’s researchers have shown us that it is never too late to get up and start exercising, to gain some HUGE benefits. They took a group of 60-80 year-old couch potatoes and slowly got them in shape. Ultimately they got them walking 40 to 60 minutes, 3 times a week. So, what is the big deal? Well they tracked the size of their brains. Their brains actually got “bigger” over the course of a year, in a very important part of the brain, called the hippocampus. That is the part of brain that is at the very heart of forming memories. To confirm these amazing “brain gains”, the University of Pittsburgh researchers tested the NEW BIGGER BRAIN of the exercisers, and they discovered that they indeed not only had bigger hippocampus, but they worked better too. It does not get much better than that does it? So, to recap the 60-80 year old sedentary folks after a year of exercise not only were in better shape after working up to a 3 times a week 40 to 60 minute work out, they reversed the brain shrinkage trend. Yes that is right, the normal trend with aging is a smaller brain, they actually turned it around and left the game of life, with bigger brains that actually worked better. Imagine if you started this routine in your 30′s and 40′s to maintain your brain size and function..! Bottomline: It is not to late to increase your memory, get in shape and have improve the quality of ones life. An extra bonus, is that regular exercise helps manage healthy blood sugars too.
