A US military commander is among a dozen of US soldiers who have been placed in quarantine on Tuesday at a US military base in Italy after wrapping up a mission to Liberia, one of West African countries suffering from Ebola outbreak.
Italian authorities were quoted by local radio stations as saying that US Major General Darryl Williams is among the 11 US soldiers who were placed in quarantine in Caserma Del Din, a military installation in Vicenza, Italy.
They will remain there for 21 days.
Police in Vicenza said the move is a precautionary international measure signed by Italy in response to people coming from epidemic areas, adding that the soldiers will not be able to see their families during the three-week period.
Williams, in a statement to Italian news agency, said that their condition is good, affirming that all of the soldiers quarantined are in good condition and did not catch the virus.
Another 100 US soldiers from US military units stationed in Africa are expected to face the same procedures when arriving in Italy in the next few days. Ebola has killed nearly 5,000 people since March, mostly in West Africa.
