If you are somebody who has thought of being pregnant much later in life, you are bound to be surrounded by questions like- how does my age affect my pregnancy? Will I be more prone to gestational diabetes or preeclampsia? Is adoption my safest choice? Even though pregnancy risk may vary from women to women, nowadays doctors give two thumbs up even for later pregnancies. But in order to ensure a healthy pregnancy for older-mums-to-be, here we have Dr. Asha Sharma, Head of Gynecology Department at Rockland Hospital, New Delhi who clarifies the top 5 doubts regarding age and pregnancy. Getting pregnant is a simple task, even after 35. After all I am regular with my menstruation cycle. It is not true, As the age advances, women's fertility after 35 decreases because of low chances of conceiving. It might take a longer time for a woman to conceive or older mums might have to face problems of sub-fertility. Women who become pregnant after 35 years of age have a higher risk of coming in contact with gestational diabetes, endometriosis, protein in the urine and so on. I am 35 and single by choice. I think adoption is my only choice. It is false. These days women working in corporate sectors, by the time they get settled, they realise that age has advanced, but it is not that they cannot conceive. With medical technology becoming advanced, they can become mothers and produce their own child. I have been pregnant twice before. The third pregnancy won't be much of a tough task to handle. It is true, after two normal deliveries, the third one will not be much of a problem unless your age has advanced or you have developed some kind of a disease like thyroid, diabetes or so on. Do herbal supplements help in getting pregnant pain-free and quickly? How about dietary changes? True. Some herbal supplements do help getting pregnant and dietary changes definitely help especially if you have polycystic ovarian disease. "I just need to go off the pill, and I'll be pregnant". How true is this statement? Not always, however it may be true in some cases. Sometimes in infertile women, we put them on some contraceptive pills which when we stop and induce ovulation by medicine, the women have better chances of getting pregnant in that cycle.
