The Gulf Cooperation Council’s Committee for Elderly Care began its two-day meeting on Sunday at their headquarters in the Supreme Council of Health (SCH). In a speech on this occasion, Director of Communication and Media Department at the SCH Jassim Fakhroo said that Elderly Care in the GCC societies is a moral and civilized obligation and a family and social responsibility that has the spirit of solidarity and communication among generations which is underscored by the Islamic faith and law. He added that this meeting comes to reflect the constant concern of the committee’s members to activate the resolutions issued by the GCC Council of Health Ministries in the field of Elderly Care and the mechanisms of implementing the recommendations issued by the committee. This meeting also comes to follow-up activities and events initiated and implemented by the member States and to assess the current situation of the care services provided to the Elderly, he explained. He expressed his thanks to all participants, wishing success to the GCC joint effort to achieve best services in this area. The GCC Committee for Elderly Care meeting will discuss several topics including the means of furthering cooperation between the Committee and the World Health Organisation’s Regional Office for Eastern Mediterranean within the framework of care for the elderly. The meeting will be an opportunity for the GCC Committee for Elderly Care to discuss the possibility of organising an elderly care week for the GCC region, as well as to review reports by member states of the Cooperation Council within the field of elderly care, as to the decisions which have been implemented and the recommendations for legislation. The Committee will also look into the prospects of preparing a GCC wide unified strategy for elderly care, applying accreditation standards for care of the elderly in the member states, outlining media policy for addressing the elderly and their care for the GCC and other related issues.
