South African president discharged from hospital after gallstone operation

South African President Jacob Zuma was discharged from hospital Sunday after a successful surgery to remove gallstones, the presidency said.

Zuma, 73, underwent the operation Saturday night, said presidential spokesperson Bongani Majola.

"Doctors are pleased with the outcome of the operation. The president will spend the next few days resting and recuperating at home. He will also work from home during this period," he said.

He said the gallstones were discovered during a routine medical check-up about two months ago, adding that the period of recess in parliament and cabinet provided an opportunity for the operation.

"The presidency wishes the president well and a speedy recovery," Majola said.

Zuma reportedly suffers from some health problems, including high blood pressure, diabetes and a heart condition.
