More than a thousand people attended a funeral on Thursday in east China's Wenling City in honor of a doctor who was stabbed to death while working. Wang Yunjie, deputy head in the ear, nose and throat department of the No. 1 People's Hospital in Wenling City in Zhejiang Province, was stabbed by a knife-wielding man while performing outpatient care on Friday. The suspect, Lian Enqing, 33, was subdued in the hospital by security staff after assaulting Wang and two other doctors. The man is currently in detention. The killing stirred outrage among medical staff in the city. About 100 medical workers demonstrated on Monday holding signs that read, "protecting the safety of medical staff" and called for respect. Rows of wreaths were displayed at the memorial hall in the funeral home on Thursday as mourners weeped over the death of the well-respected doctor, who died at the age of 47. Among the mourners were many of Wang's colleagues and patients. Nurses at the hospital where Wang worked took off their caps in silent mourning Thursday morning during their work break. Police said the suspect had been a patient of another doctor in the hospital and he had been unhappy with the results of a minor nose operation.
