UN Security Council on Thursday adopted unanimously resolution 2177 which aims to limit and eliminate the unprecedented extent of the Ebola outbreak in Africa, while UN Chief Ban Ki-moon established a UN emergency health mission to counter the deadly virus.
The resolution encourages the governments of three Western African countries to accelerate the establishment of national mechanisms to provide rapid diagnosis and work on isolating suspected Ebola cases, treatment measures, effective medical services and public education campaigns.
The resolution calls for increasing the international assistance, including health workers and humanitarian relief supplies.
It also encourages the governments of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea to continue their efforts to resolve and mitigate the wider political, security, socio-economic and humanitarian dimensions of the disease outbreak, which killed hundreds of people.
The resolution calls on Member States, including those of the region, to lift general travel and border restrictions imposed, as well as urging airlines and shipping companies to maintain trade and transport links with the affected countries and the wider region.
Meanwhile, the UN Secretary-General Ban, in remarks to the UNSC, announced the establishment of the United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response, or UNMEER, which is a combination of the World Health Organization's strategic perspective with "a very strong logistics and operational capability." The UNMEER has five priorities, to stop the outbreak, to treat the infected, to ensure the essential services, to preserve stability and further outbreaks.
His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah contributed to the WHO a sum of USD five million to help combat the outbreak of Ebola virus in West Africa.
