
"Gone Girl" took the first place at the North American box office in its debut during the weekend, earning 38 million U.S. dollars, according to the box office tracker website Rentrak.
The movie, directed by twice Oscar nominated best director David Fincher, is based on the bestselling book of the same name by Gillian Flynn about a husband whose wife went missing.
Fincher is the director of "The Social Network" and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button".
The horror movie "Annabelle," which is about a supernatural doll, took the second place, with 37.2 million dollars.
The action-thriller "The Equalizer," fell from the first into the third place, with 19 million dollars.
And "The Boxtrolls," an animated film, took the fourth place, with 12.4 million dollars.
The other six most popular films in North America this weekend were "The Maze Runner" (12 million), "Left Behind" (6.9 million), "This Is Where I Leave You" (4 million), "Dolphin Tale 2" (3.5 million), "Guardians Of The Galaxy" (3 million), and "No Good Need" (2.5 million).
