Four people died of thirst after getting lost in the Libyan desert between the cities of south Sabha and Tripoli on Saturday. Security authorities have since rescued another man and woman. The Libyan family, including two young children and two illegal immigrants, were travelling across the desert when their car broke down. They eventually ran out of water which led to the deaths of the two children, their father and one of the illegal immigrants. The children’s mother and the other traveller were found alive two kilometres from the dead bodies. Contraband smugglers and illegal immigrants often perish attempting to cross the desert to avoid security checks. The Libyan desert is considered one of the most dangerous in the world, particularly to those who enter it without guides.
