Aleppo Islamists issue croissant ruling

An Islamic body in Syria's northwestern city of Aleppo has issued a ruling against the consumption of croissants. The Sharia Council in Aleppo described the French bread as the "food of infidels," adding its roots lie in French colonialism. The edict was signed and stamped by committee leader, al-Sheikh abu-Mohammed, based on information from Sheikh Abdel-Maged Hussein about the colonial connotations of croissants. The document said that the word "croissant" means crescent in French, and the bread reflects the French triumph against Muslims, seen as the crescent is a Islamic symbol. Islamist groups controlling areas in Aleppo have issued a number of rulings over the last few months, such as banning women from driving, and authorising the arrest of those who are not fasting in Ramadan.
