Fighting between two Arab tribes has killed 100 people in Sudan's Darfur region, where worsening unrest has left hundreds dead this year, one of the tribes said on Sunday. The battle between a group of Rezeigat and the rival Maaliya tribe happened near Adila in East Darfur state on Saturday. "We clashed with Maaliya... and we destroyed a compound of theirs and killed 70 of them," said a Rezeigat source, who declined to be named. "We lost 30 of our men." A source told Arab Today that the leadership of the two tribes will meet on Sunday with Sudanese Interior Minister Ibrahim Mahmoud Hamed and heads of the ?military and security forces in order to gain control over the situation. The Maaliya tribe accuses Rezeigat of assassinating a number of its members whilst forcing others to leave the area, and describes the situation as ethnic cleansing and forced ?displacement. The tribe issued a statement accusing the state authorities, headed by Governor ?Abdel Hamid of not acting to contain the situation.? According to sources, clashes erupted after a group belonging to the Maaliya tribe stole cattle and ?sheep from Rezeigat tribe who attempted to recapture their livestock. Tension remains high in the region, the source added, warning that fighting might resume at any moment. Tribal conflicts are a major problem confronting the Sudanese government, which have so far failed to solve it despite the inter- tribe reconciliation conferences it had held. The Darfur community consists of different African and Arab tribes, among whom unrest frequently erupts due to disputes on pastures and water resources.
