Council of Representatives First Deputy Speaker Ali Al Aradi has been elected member on the Human Rights Committee of the International Parliamentary Union (IPU).
Bahrain is the first in the Arab Gulf and the third Arab country to win a seat on the committee since the IPU's creation in 1889.
Al Aradi was elected at the 132nd session of the IPU in the Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, where he led a parliamentary delegation.
Al Aradi said in his first statement "the trust and confidence on the part of the IPU in nominating Bahrain affirms the Kingdom's prestigious position. Bahrain has been able within a short time span to gain this place despite its modern parliamentary experience".
The committee looks into the issues of parliamentarians of member countries.
