Egypt's Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr is expected to meet Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir in Khartoum on Tuesday to discuss the results of Amr’s meeting in Ethiopia. Sudan, like Egypt, also expects to be affected by Ethiopia's Renaissance Dam. The Egyptian minister who arrived to Addis Ababa on Sunday, met with the Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister Tedros Adhanom on Monday in hopes of defusing tensions over a huge dam Ethiopia is building on the Blue Nile River. Egypt and Ethiopia began a sharp exchange of words after Ethiopia last month started to divert Nile waters as part of the construction of its massive $4.2 billion hydro-electric project dubbed the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. The Renaissance Dam has been a source of concern for the Egyptian government, which fears that the project, if completed, could negatively impact the volume of Nile water reaching Egypt. Ethiopian officials, for their part, have attempted to dispel fears regarding the dam's potential impact on downstream countries, insisting that the project would ultimately benefit all of the riparian states.
