All Israeli memorials in Sinai should be destroyed, said a local liberal political party in response to Israel’s decision to demolish an Egyptian memorial in the West Bank. The Liberal Movement called all nearby governorates to join a march aimed at destroying all Israeli monuments on December 30. This includes what the party has nicknamed “the rock of shame”, in reference to the Dayan rock. The action will be coordinated with another march aimed at demolishing a Jewish shrine in the Beheira governorate, west of Cairo. In a statement, the party denounced the silence of the government on the matter, which prompted them to take action. There are three Israeli monuments in Sinai. The first, in Sheikh Zuwaid, is a tall rock sculpted in the shape of Palestine. The names of fallen soldiers are engraved in the rock. The second memorial is located in el-Hasana. It is a statue of an Israeli soldier carrying a rifle. A number of Egyptian fighters killed a group of Israeli soldiers at this very location. The last monument is a marble pillar located in al-Arish. Locals have demanded its removal for a long time.
