Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi has relieved Attorney General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud from his current position and appointed him as Egypt’s Ambassador to the Vatican. Some have argued that this decision is not lawful. President Morsi’s office manager Ahmed Abdel Aty said that the President will soon appoint a new Attorney General. He explained that this decision was based on the current political situation. Some have objected that the New Attorney General did not investigate the “Battle of the Camels” case, to which Abdel Aty replied that this was left to President Morsi’s appreciation and that the right person would be in the right role for each step on the investigation. President Morsi held a meeting in the presidential palace with his deputy Councilor Mahmoud Mekki, Prime Minister Hesham Kandil and Defence, Interior and Justice Ministers. Morsi ordered the draft of a new law to protect the outcomes of the Revolution such as the right to protest and justice and prevent abuse of properties. He said all the cases where justice was not properly applied are being reopened. Judicial sources told Arabstoday that the President’s decision to dismiss Counselor Abdel Meguid Mahmoud from his position as Attorney General is legal because he was promoted and appointed to another position. Other judicial sources said it is not permitted Mahmoud did not want to resign. Sources added that according to the law, the President has the right to appoint a new Attorney General only if the Attorney dies or resigns.
