Israeli soldiers shot and wounded a Palestinian who was part of a group trying to cross a security fence from the West Bank into Israel on Tuesday, the army said. "Several Palestinians attempted to infiltrate into Israel by crossing the security fence near Oranit checkpoint" in the northern West Bank, an army spokeswoman told AFP. "IDF (Israeli Defence Forces) soldiers... operated in order to prevent them from crossing the fence by firing in their direction," she said. "One Palestinian was wounded and was treated on the spot by medics," she said, without giving further details. The shooting came a week after a Palestinian man was shot dead by Israeli soldiers in the northern Gaza Strip as he tried to cut through the security fence separating the territory from Israel, according to the army. The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, an NGO based in Hamas-ruled Gaza, condemned that incident as an "excessive use of lethal force" by the army. In August, Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian near the border fence in Gaza in a similar incident. Source: AFP
