South Sudan vice-president sworn in

South Sudan's president Salva Kiir has sworn in his newly appointed deputy, James Wani Igga, during a ceremony in Juba on Sunday. In his first speech, Igga pledged to work for the people of South Sudan, highlighting the need to provide job opportunities for unemployed young people, as well as resolving the security problems in his country. On Saturday the parliament unanimously reached an agreement on the appointment of Igga, the then parliamentary speaker, as the president's deputy. Igga had been parliament speaker since the signing of the Juba-Khartoum peace agreement in 2005. He also was a leading member of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM). He belongs to al-Baraa tribe, has lived in Juba all his life and is a good friend of President Salva Kiir. Meanwhile, Mabior Garang, the oldest son of John Garang, the late South Sudanese rebel leader has criticised the Salva Kiir administration, accusing it of stealing $4 billion of the donors funds during the past four years, as well as $10bn worth of oil revenues. Speaking to al-Sudani newspaper, Mabior predicted a coup against the South Sudan president.
