2 Indian security men killed in landmine attack by leftwing rebels

Two Indian security force members, including a deputy commandant, were killed on Friday when leftwing rebels detonated a landmine in the eastern state of Orissa, said local media.

The attack, allegedly by Nasal rebels, took place at the state's Koraput district, Indo-Asian News Service quoted police as saying.

The victims died when their motorbike ran over a landmine in a forest area, the report quoted Koraput Superintendent of Police Charan Singh Meena as saying.

The Naxal rebels are observing a two-day "strike" in the area where the attack took place, to counter an operation by security forces against them.

The rebels are numbered at some 10,000 and active in about 10 states, mostly in remote poor rural areas in central and eastern India.
