Two people have been killed and 48 injured in clashes which took place Saturday evening and Sunday morning, said the head of the Central Department for Critical and Urgent Care. In statements Sunday, Khalid el-Khatib said 39 people were injured near Cairo's Qasr el-Nile Bridge, eight people in Mahalla and one in Daqahlia. The deaths were reported in Cairo, he said. On Saturday, Egypt was gripped by mass demonstrations in protest of a court ruling in Port Said Stadium carnage, which left 72 people dead and 254 others injured. The criminal court upheld a previous death penalty ruling against 21 defendants, sentenced others to terms between 10 years and life imprisonment and acquitted 28 more. The Port Said stadium carnage occurred last year following a soccer match when fans, allegedly of the local al-Masry team, assaulted supporters of rival al-Ahly.
