22 European countries take part in campaign against speeding

There will be an increase in the number of speed checks on the roads of more than 20 European countries on Thursday, Belgian media have reported.

A total of 22 countries, including Belgium, will participate in the exercise, dubbed the "flash marathon" on Thursday, which lasts from 6 a.m. until midnight, according to Le Soir.

This means there will be an increased number of speed traps in operation in the country. There will also be an increase in speed controls in Belgium's neighbouring countries of Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.

Since 2007, it has been possible for traffic offences, such as speeding, to be subject to cross-border prosecutions.

Meanwhile, Belgian police are set to stage a day of increased speed controls on April 23 as part of its own flash marathon. However, according to Le Soir, this date has not been officially confirmed.
