Abdul-Jalil: NTC can’t control militias

The leader of Libya’s National Transitional Council has acknowledged that it is powerless to control militias that refuse to lay down their arms following the fall of the Gaddafi regime. Mustafa Abdul-Jalil admitted that the NTC has made mistakes. Talking to the Associated Press, he said that the remnants of the former regime still pose a threat and it will take years for Libya’s new leaders to overcome the “heavy heritage” of corruption and distrust after more than four decades of Gaddafi rule. In January, forces loyal to the former regime took control of the former Gaddafi stronghold of Bani Walid.
