AES implementation reduces accident fatalities in Malaysia

The implementation of the Automatic Enforcement System (AES) in Malaysia has reduced accident fatalities and raised the rate of road compliance regulations.

Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai said based on Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) analysis on road accident statistics in 14 locations that installed AES cameras, it was revealed that accident fatalities had reduced to 12 cases during the eight-month period after the system was implemented from 19 cases during the same period before implementation, the Malaysian news agency Bernama reported.

'This means that AES managed to reduce seven accident fatalities or 36.84 per cent for only eight months,' he said.

The transport ministry had been asked to state the total fines collected through the AES system up to date and its effectiveness in reducing road Bernama added.

Prior to AES implementation, the average compliance rate of speed limits on working days at six locations with AES fixed cameras was about 63 per cent compared with 91 per cent after implementation, the minister said, citing a study conducted by Miros.

"For four AES fixed cameras in traffic light junctions, the rate of noncompliance before AES implementation was 4.3 per cent, which was reduced to 2.2 per cent after implementation," he said.

The government was confident with the AES nationwide implementation, the compliance rate for traffic regulations would increase, leading to a drastic drop in the number of accident fatalities.
