Al-Kidwa resigns as deputy special envoy for Syria

UN and Arab Arab Deputy Joint Special Representative for Syria Nasser Al-Kidwa has resigned effective this week, it was announced on Monday.Al-Kidwa "confirmed to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon his intention to leave his current position, effective this week," the UN press office said in a statement.He has indicated to the Secretary General his willingness to serve the UN in other capacities, should the Secretary General wish, the statement added.Ban expressed his appreciation to Al-Kidwa for his service under both Joint Special Representative Lakhdar Brahimi and Joint Special Envoy Kofi Annan "in trying to end the bloodshed in Syria and move toward a Syrian-led transition based on the 30 June 2012 Geneva communique." The task of the former Palestinian Foreign Minister was to bring the various groups in the Syrian opposition together. Under his tenure, the Syrian opposition was more fragmented than ever. He never spoke to the press or reacted to any events regarding the Syria crisis. He is the second UN official to resign after Annan's resignation two years ago.
