Algeria, UK back political solution for Libya crisis

Algeria and the United Kingdom share identical viewpoints on the need of finding a political solution to the Libyan crisis, Algerian Minister for Maghreb and African Affairs Abdelkader Messahel said Monday in Algiers, according to the Algeria Press Service.

"There is a convergence of views between the two countries for a political solution and the formation of a government of national unity in Libya," Messahel told the press at the end of the 4th session of the Algerian-British strategic partnership on security, he co-chaired with Kim Darroch, National Security Adviser of British Prime Minister David Cameron.

He said that the talks focused on the terrorist threat in the Sahel region, notably the deterioration of the situation in Libya and its impact on regional security.

The minister added that this session was centered on the Algerian experience in terms of deradicalization, -which “highly interests » the British partner-, the conference, scheduled in Algiers for 22 - 23 July on the fight against terrorism and further questions relating to exchange of data and training.

Stress was also put on the situation in the Mediterranean basin and the Algerian experience in the fight against the clandestine immigration, the same official added.

Darroch noted the progress made by Algeria and the United Kingdom in various sectors of bilateral cooperation in recent years through the exchange of high level visits on both sides.
