Appeals trial of protesters who attacked US embassy postponed

A Tunis court has postponed the prosecutor's appeals trial concerning the sentences of 20 Salafists convicted of attacking the U.S. embassy in Tunis. "At the request of the defense, the hearing was rescheduled for March 25," the judge said. The prosecutor announced in May he would appeal the two-year suspended jail terms given to the suspects for their roles in the 2012 attack. U.S. officials have also said they were deeply troubled by the sentences, Middle East Online reported. Hundreds of angry Islamists attacked the embassy after an American-made film mocking their religion was posted on the Internet. Four assailants were killed and dozens were injured. Eighty suspects are still awaiting trial for their alleged participation in the attack. Tunisia's government has accused the radical Salafist group Ansar al-Sharia of planning the attack, but no organizers of the protests have been arrested.
