The Arab League condemned an announcement by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he will personally participate in digs underneath Al Aqsa Mosque this week.
The announcement comes in tandem with the storming of Bab Al Rahmah Muslim Cemetery, which is adjacent to Al Aqsa Mosque, by the Israeli antiquities authority and the razing of several graves there, assistant secretary general for Palestine affairs Saeed Abu Ali said in a press release Monday.
Netanyahu’s announcement and the authority’s act are a response to the two resolutions adopted by the UNESCO on restoring the Palestinian cultural heritage in Al Quds and deeming Al Aqsa Mosque and Al Haram Al Sharif as Muslim sites with no Jewish history, he said.
Also, 346 Jewish settlers stormed Al Aqsa Mosque on Sunday to perform rituals inside the holy site, he said.
The Israeli digs under the mosque threaten its structure and could lead to its collapse, he added.
