Army identifies paratrooper killed in training accident at Fort Bragg

The U.S. Army said it has identified the paratrooper who was killed in a training accident in Fort Bragg., N.C., as 22-year-old Pfc. James Groth. Groth, of Ethal, Wash., died from injuries sustained during an artillery live-fire training exercise on Friday, the Army Times reported. Seven other paratroopers, who were also members of the 82nd Airborne Division, were injured. Two remain in serious condition and the other five were treated and released. The soldiers were training with a M777 howitzer at the time of the incident. Groth joined the Army in 2012, and is survived by his wife, Jordan Nicole Groth, and his parents, Wayne and Billie Groth. "Losing a trooper is heartbreaking," Lt. Col. Joseph O'Callaghan, commander of 3rd Battalion, said in a statement. "Pfc. Groth will be missed by his friends and fellow soldiers in the battalion. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
