Assad continues killing own people with barrel bombs

Syrian President Basher Al-Assad "continues to brutally murder his own people," including with his recent use of barrel bombs in and around Aleppo, which killed dozens of citizens, many of them women and children, the White House said Monday. "The use of those bombs further underscores the brutality of the regime and the lengths it will go to attack and kill its own people," press secretary Jay Carney said during a briefing. These specific weapons are not intended to strike a particular target but rather to cause mass casualties, which is what they did, he said. "So the brutality continues, and that is why it is so important to take the actions that we have taken and move to a political process and a resolution," he said. There is no resolution to the conflict in Syria without a negotiated political solution, Carney said. "And that is why it is important to move forward to Geneva and why it is important to engage in a political process that can produce a resolution so that the bloodshed can end and the Syrian people can begin to rebuild the country and enjoy the better future that they deserve," he added.
