At least 10 people have been killed in a clash between rival drug gangs in Honduras, the country’s deputy Defence minister said. The shootout happened in La Mosquitia, a remote region on Honduras’ Atlantic coast. Local authorities said the number of dead could be as high as 16, with women and children among the victims. More than 3,000 people have been killed in Honduras in the first six months of 2013, according to government figures. the BBC reported. Army spokesman Colonel Jeremias Arevalos says Centeno’s group faced off a drug gang led by Honduran Fredy Marmol. Arevalos says the two groups have been fighting over drug trafficking routes and cocaine shipments. Honduras has become a main transit route for South American cocaine, and violence tied to trafficking has helped drive the country’s homicide rate to the highest level in the world.
