Mombasa - XINHUA

At least seven people were on Sunday injured in a blast at a crusade in coastal city of Mombasa. Regional Criminal Investigations (CID) Officer Ambrose Munyasia confirmed the incident, saying the assailants hurled a hand grenade at worshipers at crusade situated in Likoni area. Munyasia said that no arrest has been made so far in the Sunday attack. "We have reports of grenade attack and unfortunately several people have been injured and rushed to various hospital within Likoni area," said Munyasia. "We have dispatched a team to collect vital evidence from the scene that will assist us in apprehend the culprits," he told Xinhua by telephone on Sunday. According to eyewitness, a loud explosion was heard around the area where worshippers were holding prayers at Mrima area situated within Likoni area. A team of officers from the flying squad officers and special crime prevention unit visited the scene and cordoned of the area as they pieced together crucial evidence. The recent attack occurred in the coastal following sporadic grenade attacks witnessed in various parts of the country blamed to be carried out by Al-Shabaab terror group. The anti-terrorism police unit has issued alert of possible terror attacks in major cities following reports that returnees of Al-Shabaab terror suspects from Somalia are regrouping to cause more havoc in the East African nation. On May 27, anti-terrorism police officers shot dead a wanted terror suspect at Kwa Bulo in Mombasa's Kisauni area and recovered a cache of weapons. Khalid Ahmed was trailed by the officers from Nairobi and killed in a shoot-out at his home. Head of Anti-Terrorism Unit Boniface Mwaniki said Ahmed, a Somalia national, had sneaked into the country from after undergoing paramilitary training. The police recovered a hand grenade, gun and two magazines loaded with 60 rounds of ammunition from the house. "We have been monitoring him. He was a dangerous terrorist who was out to cause mayhem in the country," Mwaniki said. The suspect had managed to evade the massive police hunt for about a year since he went to Somalia. Kenya has experienced a series of explosions after troops rolled into Somalia to hunt down Al-Shabaab militants who had been blamed for several insecurity incidents. It is believed that the attacks are being committed by remnants of the terror group. Kenya's tourism has suffered a decline in the number of tourists arriving since September 2011 when the Somali militant group, the Al-Shabaab, carried out the kidnappings of tourists in the Lamu archipelago and the kidnapping of the Spanish volunteers. The coastal city of Mombasa, the capital Nairobi and other parts of Kenya have suffered a series of grenade attacks since Kenya sent troops into Somalia last year to try to pursue Al- Shabaab insurgents it blames for a surge in violence and kidnappings threatening tourism.
