As Israel has rejected the French peace initiative to end Israeli occupation, and Palestinians welcomed it, the Egyptian president, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has been pushing efforts to hold a three-way summit wit hthe Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
“I say to the Israelis and ask the Israeli leadership to allow the broadcast of this speech at least once or twice. There is a real opportunity for peace even if in the short term there is no real basis given the conditions in the region,” al-Sisi said on Egyptian television.
A senior Palestinian official confirmed to Ynet on Monday night that contact had indeed been established between the two parties via the Egyptians in an effort to hold the summit in the near future.
To its part, France said that the summit will still carry on even if Israel rejects to attend, while Netanyahu said that he would like to have direct negotiations will Mahmoud Abbas.
