China on Friday said it believes the Spanish government is capable of handling its domestic issues after Basque separatist group ETA announced the end of its armed struggle. "Past and current Spanish governments have always made efforts to realize internal peace, and China believes that the Spanish government is capable of properly handling relevant issues," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said at a daily press briefing. Jiang's comments came in response to a question regarding ETA's announcement on Thursday that the group ended its 40-year struggle for the independence of Basque regions in northern Spain and southwestern France. The group had been under heavy pressure from both Spanish and French security forces in recent years, and over 700 of its members are currently imprisoned.
