China says it supports the Libyan National Transitional Council's bid to represent Libya at the United Nations. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said Thursday at a regular briefing that Beijing was in favor of the National Transitional Council taking Libya's U.N. member seat. The seat is still held by Moammar Gadhafi's government, which has been effectively ousted from power by the National Transitional Council. Earlier this week, China became the last member of the U.N. Security Council to formally recognize the transitional council as the ruling authority of Libya. Beijing said Tuesday that it has been reassured by Libya's provisional authority that agreements made with China before Gadhafi was overthrown will be upheld.
