A Chinese court ruled Monday for the imprisonment of Wang Lijun, a former Chinese official, for 15 years in prison after he was found guilty of bending the law for selfish ends, defection, abuse of power and bribe-taking. Chinese news agency Xinhua reported today that Wang, a former vice mayor and police chief of southwest China's Chongqing municipality, was charged with several crimes and was convicted for all of them by the Chengdu City Intermediate People's Court in southwest China's Sichuan Province. Wang received seven years in prison for the charge of bending the law for selfish ends, two years in prison and deprivation of his political rights for one year for the charge of defection, two years in prison for the power abuse charge and nine years in prison for the charge of bribe-taking. He received a combined punishment of 15 years in prison and deprivation of his political rights for one year. The Wang trial was considered one of the biggest political scandals in China. The scandal involves a murder crime that was committed by the wife of the Communist Party leader in Chongqing Bo Xilang. Wang covered up evidence convicting the wife even though he knew she was a suspect. Xilang was removed from his post after the scandal, and is currently under investigation by the party. His wife, Gu Kailai, was given a suspended death sentence because the court saw she was suffering from a mental breakdown. Kailai reportedly killed British businessman Neil Heywood over an "economic conflict."
